The former Eagle Ottawa plant will likely take significant efforts from the City, the State, the DEQ, the property owners, and the MEDC in order to get redeveloped. It would be wonderful if the former Eagle Ottawa and Challenge Machine buildings were redeveloped into an innovation center and/or an extension from a college or university. This would bring jobs, enhance the neighborhood, retain knowledge-based workers and encourage job training. Within the redevelopment, the city can secure an easement to eventually connect the boardwalk to Eastown.
The Scott A. Flahive Memorial Boat Launch at East Grand River Park and the East Grand River Park improvements are terrific. The park is cleaner than ever and the boat launch is again usable. City Council needs to continue their efforts to improve the park and encourage its use.
Chinook Pier needs another evaluation. The city does not possess a good track record of property management. Owning Chinook Pier may not be the best option to control the waterfront. The building could be sold, but with proper deed restrictions to protect against unfavorable future redevelopment.
