There are multiple areas we need to focus on when it comes to economic development, including tourism, manufacturing, job growth, and promoting entrepreneurialism. We need to promote economic growth, while maintaining the image of our quaint community.
Currently, tourism is seasonal in nature but is still an important component to Grand Haven’s success. Tourism not only brings in dollars, but potential new businesses, citizens, and diversity. Tourism should be promoted and travelers should feel welcome when they come to visit our beautiful lakeshore community.
The manufacturing base has been in decline, but hope should not be lost. When it comes to manufacturing, Michigan, in general, is obviously in a difficult position right now. However, the quality of life in Grand Haven is second to none. We can sell that ideal to new businesses considering locating here. We also need to help the existing manufacturers prosper and do everything possible to retain those businesses. There is an upside to this real estate market: it is currently less expensive for businesses to purchase facilities here than elsewhere.
Job growth should be focused on training and retaining knowledge-based workers. These are the jobs of tomorrow. The current workforce needs help now. We need to slow the “brain drain.” The city needs to work with other communities to bring in an extension office from regional colleges/universities and to help create an innovation center. In addition, the city should assist in helping to redevelop obsolete properties.
Entrepreneurs have played a key role to ending past recessions. Fostering entrepreneurialism thru education, funding, and innovation are important for Grand Haven’s success. New businesses tend to employee many people directly, and then other businesses spin off and the cycle continues.
